Driver Briefing: Walkaround Checks
Why do we need a Driver Briefing?
A recent VOSA roadside check showed that a fire extinguisher was out of date and needed reinspection. Checking ADR equipment is part of walkaround checks and should be included in every pre-use inspection.
Why are Walkaround Checks important?
Walkaround checks are important to ensure every vehicle starts it's journey in a safe, roadworthy condition. They help protect the driver, the company, and the general public from the risks caused by vehicle defects or failures on the road. This is a DVSA requirement - failure to carry out checks can lead to fines, prohibition notices, or operator licence issues. The driver is personally responsible for ensuring the vehicle is safe to drive.
Actions required:
All drivers should complete a walkaround check every time they take charge of a vehicle.
The RHA poster in the driver reception in Dumbarton shows a full description of driver checks required (print outs are available).
Or the DVSA video on walkaround checks is available on the staff intranet or YouTube.
Drivers should check that fire extinguishers are within date, even if gauges are still showing as green.
If a defect is found:
Record it on your walkaround check on the app. This reports it directly to the transport office.
Do not take the vehicle out if the defect makes it unsafe or illegal. Instead contact the transport office immediately.
A proper walkaround check should take around 15 minutes —
it could save your licence, your load, or someone’s life.
